I discovered science fiction when I was about nine or ten years old. I immediately fell in love with the stuff, and I have been reading it ever since.
I am very enthusiasic about science fiction the literature, but much less so about movies and tv. In fact, I find most science fiction movies and tv shows to be so lame that I now just avoid them. A good example is the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. I saw this movie when it came out in 1969. Much of it was impressive, but I found the plot opaque. It wasn’t until about a year later when I read the novelization of the movie by Arthur C. Clarke that I understood the plot. The written word is a much better medium for exploring ideas and their implications, the great strength of science fiction, than tv or movies.
Let’s start off with the various awards, starting with the Hugos.
